How I tested them
Same four tasks, same prompts, all four tools, back to back:
- Draft a 600-word newsletter from rough bullet points.
- Read a 20-page PDF and pull the three claims that mattered.
- Research a competitor’s recent pricing changes (needs live web).
- Analyze a spreadsheet of numbers and tell me what’s off.
I wasn’t grading trivia. I was grading the stuff you’d actually pay someone to do.
Which is the best AI assistant for writing?
Claude won this one, and it wasn’t close on the newsletter task. The draft needed the least editing, kept my bullet points in order, and didn’t reach for the thesaurus every sentence. It reads like a person wrote it.
ChatGPT’s draft was fine but generic — competent, a little corporate. Gemini’s was solid and notably better if the source material lived in a Google Doc, because it just pulls it in. Perplexity is built for answers, not drafting, so I don’t judge it here.
Winner: Claude. If your week is mostly writing — emails, posts, newsletters, docs — this is the $20 you spend.
Which handles long documents and analysis best?
The 20-page PDF and the spreadsheet went to Claude and ChatGPT.
Claude’s large context window makes reading long documents feel effortless — it held the whole PDF and answered follow-ups without losing the thread. For the spreadsheet analysis, ChatGPT’s edge is that it can actually run code to crunch numbers, so its math was checkable, not guessed.
Split decision: Claude for reading and reasoning over long text; ChatGPT when you need actual computation.
Which is best for research?
Regular chatbots train on old data and will state stale facts confidently. For the competitor-pricing task — which needs today’s web — Perplexity was the right tool. It answered with citations I could click and verify, which is the whole point when you’re making a decision on the info.
