Picking an AI assistant is the first buying decision for most solo businesses, and it’s the one people overthink. This is a piece of the wider AI stack I run as a team of one, narrowed to one question: of the four flagship assistants, which single $20/month subscription earns its place? I ran all four through the same real tasks.
TL;DR — the verdict
- Best writer / long documents: Claude Pro ($20/mo).
- Best all-rounder + ecosystem: ChatGPT Plus ($20/mo).
- Best if you live in Google Workspace: Google AI Pro ($19.99/mo).
- Best for cited, live research: Perplexity Pro ($20/mo).
You do not need all four. Pick one primary based on the job you do most. Most solopreneurs are best served by Claude (if you write) or ChatGPT (if you want one tool for everything).

How I tested them
Same four tasks, same prompts, all four tools, back to back:
- Draft a 600-word newsletter from rough bullet points.
- Read a 20-page PDF and pull the three claims that mattered.
- Research a competitor’s recent pricing changes (needs live web).
- Analyze a spreadsheet of numbers and tell me what’s off.
I wasn’t grading trivia. I was grading the stuff you’d actually pay someone to do.
Which is the best AI assistant for writing?
Claude won this one, and it wasn’t close on the newsletter task. The draft needed the least editing, kept my bullet points in order, and didn’t reach for the thesaurus every sentence. It reads like a person wrote it.
ChatGPT’s draft was fine but generic — competent, a little corporate. Gemini’s was solid and notably better if the source material lived in a Google Doc, because it just pulls it in. Perplexity is built for answers, not drafting, so I don’t judge it here.
Winner: Claude. If your week is mostly writing — emails, posts, newsletters, docs — this is the $20 you spend.
Which handles long documents and analysis best?
The 20-page PDF and the spreadsheet went to Claude and ChatGPT.
Claude’s large context window makes reading long documents feel effortless — it held the whole PDF and answered follow-ups without losing the thread. For the spreadsheet analysis, ChatGPT’s edge is that it can actually run code to crunch numbers, so its math was checkable, not guessed.
Split decision: Claude for reading and reasoning over long text; ChatGPT when you need actual computation.
Which is best for research?
Regular chatbots train on old data and will state stale facts confidently. For the competitor-pricing task — which needs today’s web — Perplexity was the right tool. It answered with citations I could click and verify, which is the whole point when you’re making a decision on the info.
ChatGPT and Gemini both search the web now and did fine. But Perplexity’s citations-first design means less second-guessing. If your work is research-heavy, it’s worth a dedicated slot. I go deeper on research tools and the agents that automate research in my AI research and agents rundown.
Winner for research: Perplexity.
Which should you pick if you use Google Workspace?
If your business runs on Gmail, Docs, Sheets, and Drive, Gemini’s integration is the quiet advantage. Google AI Pro ($19.99/mo) puts Gemini inside all of them, bundles 5 TB of storage, and throws in $10/month of Google Cloud credits. For the same ~$20 you’d pay elsewhere, you also solve storage.
Winner for Google-native solopreneurs: Gemini.
So which one is worth $20/month?
Here’s the thing: they’ve stopped being interchangeable. The right question isn’t “which is best,” it’s “which matches the job I do most.”
- You write all day → Claude Pro.
- You want one tool for everything (and use images/voice/agents) → ChatGPT Plus.
- You live in Google Workspace → Google AI Pro.
- Your work is research → Perplexity Pro.
And genuinely — try the free tiers first. ChatGPT’s free plan gives unlimited text chats now, and Claude’s free model is strong for daily questions. Don’t pay until a real limit gets in your way. If you’re weighing whether any of these subscriptions is worth it, I break down the hidden costs in is an AI subscription actually worth it.

The verdict
For most solopreneurs it’s Claude if you write, ChatGPT if you want the everything-tool. One subscription, twenty bucks, done — add a second only when a real bottleneck demands it.
